Step 5: Get the Car Professionally Inspected

A vehicle may look spotless on the outside but still have hidden mechanical or structural problems. Cosmetic detailing can easily hide accident repairs, repaint work, rust, or engine issues that may cost thousands of rupees after purchase.

That's why a professional inspection is one of the smartest investments you can make before buying a used car.

You have two reliable options:

Hire an experienced, independent mechanic you trust.
Book a professional CarAdvisers Car Inspection, which includes a comprehensive digital inspection report covering the vehicle's overall condition.

What Should a Professional Inspection Include?

A thorough inspection should evaluate:

Engine performance and oil leaks
Transmission and clutch operation
Suspension and steering components
Brake system
Electrical systems
Air conditioning performance
Tyres and wheel condition
Battery health
Chassis alignment
Previous accident or structural repairs
Paint thickness and body repairs
Interior condition
Safety features, including airbags (where applicable)

A detailed inspection report gives you a clear understanding of the vehicle's actual condition and can also strengthen your negotiating position.

Step 6: Take a Proper Test Drive

Never purchase a vehicle without driving it first.

Even if the inspection report looks satisfactory, a test drive helps identify issues that may only appear under real driving conditions.

Drive the vehicle for at least 15–20 minutes on different types of roads, including smooth roads, uneven surfaces, and moderate traffic.

During the Test Drive, Check:

Cold engine start
Engine noise and vibration
Clutch performance
Gear shifting smoothness
Automatic transmission response (if applicable)
Brake performance
Steering alignment
Suspension comfort
Acceleration
Smoke from the exhaust
Air conditioning
Dashboard warning lights
Cabin noise

If something feels unusual, don't ignore it. Small issues today can become expensive repairs later.

Step 7: Verify All Vehicle Documents

Document verification is just as important as the mechanical inspection. A car with incomplete or fraudulent paperwork can create legal complications long after you've made the purchase.

Before paying any amount, verify the following:

Document	Why It Matters
Original Registration Book/File	Confirms legal ownership
Smart Card	Required for ownership transfer
Seller's CNIC	Verify ownership details
Engine & Chassis Numbers	Must match official records
Token Tax Record	Confirms tax payments are up to date
Service History	Shows maintenance record
Original Keys (including spare)	Indicates complete ownership
Bank NOC (if financed)	Confirms outstanding loan has been cleared
Japanese Auction Sheet (Imported Cars)	Verifies mileage and auction grade

For Imported Vehicles

If you're buying a Japanese imported vehicle, also verify:

Auction Sheet
Export Certificate
Bill of Lading
Import documents
Auction grade
Original mileage

These documents help confirm the vehicle's authenticity and history.

Step 8: Negotiate with Confidence

Once you've completed your research, inspection, and document verification, you're in a strong position to negotiate.

Avoid negotiating based solely on emotions or appearance. Instead, use facts gathered during the inspection.

You may negotiate based on:

Worn tyres
Upcoming maintenance
Minor body repairs
Paint work
Suspension wear
Battery replacement
Interior damage
Missing accessories

Being respectful and well-informed often results in better outcomes than aggressive bargaining.

Step 9: Complete the Purchase Safely

Once you've agreed on the price, complete the transaction carefully.

Safe Payment Tips

Choose secure payment methods such as:

Bank transfer
Real-time online bank transfer
Payment inside a bank branch

Avoid:

Large cash transactions
Unverified payment screenshots
Third-party payments from unknown individuals
Delayed payment promises

Always confirm that funds have been received before accepting delivery of the vehicle.

Complete Ownership Transfer Immediately

Many buyers make the mistake of driving on an "open letter" without transferring ownership.

This exposes both the buyer and seller to unnecessary legal risks.

After payment:

Complete biometric verification (where applicable).
Visit the relevant Excise & Taxation Department.
Transfer ownership into your name.
Update token tax records.
Obtain all original documents.
Keep copies of the transfer paperwork.

Completing the transfer promptly protects your legal ownership and avoids future complications.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a Used Car

Avoid these common—and costly—mistakes:

Buying without a professional inspection.
Skipping the test drive.
Ignoring service history.
Failing to verify the auction sheet for imported vehicles.
Trusting unusually low prices.
Purchasing a car on an open letter.
Paying before verifying ownership documents.
Overlooking maintenance and repair costs.
Buying purely based on appearance.
Rushing into a deal without comparing similar vehicles.

CarAdvisers Insight

According to CarAdvisers' market analysis, the best used car purchases are made by buyers who focus on a vehicle's condition, maintenance history, and documentation rather than simply choosing the cheapest option. A professionally inspected car with verified ownership records and complete service history often delivers better long-term value, fewer unexpected repairs, and stronger resale potential.

FAQs

How do I know if a used car is worth buying?

Check its service history, accident record, ownership documents, market price, and have it professionally inspected before making a purchase.

Should I verify the auction sheet for an imported Japanese car?

Yes. Auction sheet verification confirms the vehicle's original mileage, auction grade, repair history, and authenticity, helping you avoid fraud.

Is MTMIS verification enough before buying a used car?

No. MTMIS is a useful first step for checking registration details, but it should always be combined with a physical inspection and document verification.

What is the safest way to pay for a used car?

A verified bank transfer or payment completed at a bank branch is generally the safest option. Always confirm receipt of funds before finalizing the transaction.

Why is immediate ownership transfer important?

Transferring ownership protects you from future legal issues, traffic violations, taxes, and disputes associated with the previous owner.
