CarAdvisers Insight

Search with a specification, not an emotion.

Instead of writing:

“I want a Civic.”

write:

“I need a 2020–2022 automatic sedan, up to Rs X, under approximately Y mileage, preferably registered in my region, with no major structural repairs.”

That single change makes online search dramatically more useful.

2. Build a Market Range Before Calling Anyone

An asking price is not automatically a market price.

Open several comparable listings and create three rough bands:

Low-priced cars
Cars materially cheaper than comparable examples.

Typical asking range
Where most similar cars appear to cluster.

Premium-priced cars
Low-mileage, higher-specification, exceptionally clean or aggressively priced dealer stock.

This comparison gives you something far more useful than a single seller's claim that:

“Market se already kam laga hua hai.”

It gives you context.

Do Not Automatically Chase the Cheapest Listing

A bargain can be genuine.

But a large price gap can also reflect:

accident repairs,
repainting,
poor mechanical condition,
high mileage,
incomplete documentation,
an urgent seller,
an incorrect variant,
a duplicate or misleading advertisement,
or simply an unrealistic ad designed to attract calls.

Use a cheap listing as a reason to investigate, not a reason to rush.

3. Shortlist the Listing Before You Shortlist the Car

You do not need to visit 20 cars.

You need to eliminate weak advertisements before leaving home.

For each listing, check:

Listing Detail	Buyer Check
Exact model	Does the badge/specification match?
Variant	Base, mid or top specification?
Model year	Does it match the claimed generation?
Registration	Which jurisdiction issued it?
Mileage	Does it look plausible for the age?
Photos	Are all sides of the same car shown?
Interior	Does wear broadly match claimed mileage?
Seller	Owner, dealer or intermediary?
Condition claim	“Genuine”, repainted, accident history?
Documents	Original smart card/book available?
Price	Similar to comparable listings?

Look for Photo Inconsistencies

Before calling the seller, enlarge every photograph.

Look for:

different number plates between images,
multiple locations or backgrounds,
mismatched wheel designs,
changed seat covers,
missing badges,
colour differences,
photographs obviously taken months apart,
cropped registration plates,
screenshots lifted from another advertisement.

None automatically proves fraud.

But inconsistency should trigger more questions.

4. Call the Seller Before You Travel

One five-minute call can save a two-hour trip.

Do not start by asking:

“Final kya hai?”

Start with verification questions.

Ask:

Are you the registered owner?
How long have you owned the car?
What is the exact variant?
What is the current mileage?
Which panels have been painted or repaired?
Has the car had any major accident?
Are the original registration documents available?
Is any token tax or other government due outstanding?
If imported, do you have the auction sheet and import documents?
Will you allow an independent inspection before purchase?
Will the registered owner be available for transfer?

You are not trying to prove the seller wrong.

You are establishing a version of the car's story that you can later compare against the advertisement, inspection, documents and official records.

If all four tell the same story, confidence increases.

If they do not, find out why.

5. Do a Five-Minute Pre-Visit Verification

Before travelling, ask the seller for the registration number.

Use the relevant official Excise portal for the jurisdiction in which the vehicle is registered.

Punjab Excise provides online vehicle verification through MTMIS and operates ownership-transfer services including biometric verification. Islamabad Excise provides vehicle-detail checks, transfer services and biometric receipt verification. Sindh Excise also provides an official online vehicle-verification service. Excise & Taxation Punjab

At this point you are checking whether the advertisement broadly corresponds with an official vehicle record.

Do not treat a WhatsApp screenshot of an Excise result as verification.

Open the official portal yourself.

6. View the Car in Daylight

If the car survives the online screening, arrange a viewing.

Natural daylight makes it easier to see:

inconsistent paint shades,
poorly matched panels,
dents,
overspray,
waviness in repaired bodywork,
panel-gap differences,
rust,
tyre wear,
cracked lamps,
windscreen damage.

Inside, check whether physical wear broadly agrees with the claimed mileage.

Pay particular attention to:

steering wheel,
pedals,
driver's seat bolster,
gear selector,
switches,
door handles,
carpets.

A mismatch is not proof that the odometer has been altered.

It is a reason to investigate further.

7. Test the Car — But Do Not Confuse a Test Drive With an Inspection

A 10-minute drive is useful.

It is not a professional inspection.

During the test drive, assess:

cold-start behaviour where possible,
engine response,
transmission shifts,
steering,
brake feel,
straight-line tracking,
suspension noises,
vibrations,
air-conditioning,
dashboard warnings,
unusual sounds at different speeds.

Drive without loud music.

A car can photograph beautifully and still reveal its problems once it moves.

8. Inspect Only the Cars That Survive Your Screening

This is where the buying process can become far more efficient than simply booking inspections on every interesting advertisement.

A professional inspection should come after you have already screened:

price → seller → basic record → photos → in-person viewing → test drive

Then inspect the one or two cars you are genuinely prepared to buy.

CarAdvisers offers a 220+ point pre-purchase Car Inspection for PKR 3,000 (limited-time offer), covering areas including body and paint, engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, electrical systems, tyres, structural elements and OBD-II diagnostics where applicable, followed by a digital report. CarAdvisers Inspection

A professional inspection should help answer three different questions:

Is the car structurally acceptable?

Look for evidence of significant accident repair, structural work, welding, chassis concerns and body repair.

What will require money soon?

Tyres, brakes, suspension components, battery, fluids and other wear items may not make a vehicle unsuitable — but they affect what it is worth to you.

Do the seller's claims match the car?

If a seller says:

“100% genuine”

and paint-depth readings show several repainted panels, you now have an objective basis for further discussion.

9. Do Not Trust an Old Inspection Report Blindly

This is an increasingly important online-buying issue.

A seller may say:

“Inspection already karwai hui hai.”

That can be useful — but you still need to verify the report.

Check:

inspection date,
registration number,
chassis number where displayed,
mileage at the time of inspection,
images of the inspected vehicle,
whether the report is genuine or merely a screenshot,
whether the car's current condition still matches it.

An inspection describes the car at the time it was inspected. CarAdvisers also states that an inspection evaluates condition at that point; it cannot guarantee that a vehicle will never develop another fault. CarAdvisers

A report from months ago cannot tell you whether the car was damaged, repaired or mechanically altered yesterday.

REPORT ≠ CURRENT CONDITION

10. For Japanese Imports, Verify the Past Separately

A physical inspection tells you what the vehicle is like today.

A verified Japanese auction record can tell you important things about its earlier history in Japan.

Those are different questions.

CarAdvisers Auction Sheet Verification uses the vehicle's chassis number to retrieve available Japanese auction information such as recorded mileage, auction grade, damage markings and inspector remarks. CarAdvisers

Do not assume a printed sheet supplied by the seller is automatically authentic.

Auction-sheet fraud can involve altered mileage, grades and damage information, which is why independent verification matters.

The useful rule is:

Auction history tells you what was recorded then.
Inspection tells you what exists now.

For a Japanese import, ideally check both.

11. Verify the Car, the Documents and the Seller as One Package

Before payment, four things should agree:

1. The person selling the car
2. The original registration document
3. The official Excise record
4. The physical vehicle

Physically match the chassis number and, where relevant, engine number with the registration record.

Punjab Excise's ownership-transfer requirements include the original registration certificate, seller and purchaser documentation and current token-tax status, while its transfer workflow incorporates biometric verification.

Islamabad Excise similarly provides official transfer-of-ownership services and vehicle-detail verification. Islamabad Excise

For a financed or leased vehicle, ensure any required bank or leasing-company clearance is available before concluding the transaction.

Never Solve a Document Mismatch With a Verbal Explanation

If:

the chassis differs,
owner details do not make sense,
the registered owner cannot participate,
documents are missing,
or a financing/transfer issue remains unresolved,

pause the purchase until the relevant authority confirms the position.

12. Negotiate the Car You Inspected — Not the Car in the Advertisement

Now return to the asking price.

Your negotiation should incorporate:

Market comparison + inspection findings + immediate maintenance + documentation/dues

Suppose the seller asks Rs 5 million.

The inspection shows:

two repainted panels,
tyres approaching replacement,
weak battery,
suspension work needed.

That does not automatically mean the car is bad.

It means Rs 5 million may no longer be the right price.

This is where an inspection report becomes a buying tool rather than simply a pass/fail certificate.

13. Be Very Careful With Online Token Payments

Do not let urgency bypass verification.

A seller saying:

“Do aur buyers ready hain, token abhi bhej dein”

does not change the physical condition or documentation of the car.

FIA's cyber-safety material similarly warns against electronic financial fraud and advises people not to share sensitive banking credentials, PINs or OTPs. FIA

Never share:

OTP,
ATM PIN,
card credentials,
banking password,
unnecessary personal financial information.

A real car deal does not require you to surrender control of your banking account.

14. Transfer First-Class Ownership, Not Just Keys

Receiving the keys does not complete the ownership process.

Complete the official transfer according to the registration jurisdiction.

Punjab now provides vehicle-transfer biometric facilities, including through the Pak Identity framework announced in 2026, while Islamabad, Sindh and KP maintain their respective Excise systems and procedures.

Requirements differ by province or territory, so confirm the current process directly with the relevant Excise authority before releasing final payment.

Avoid leaving a purchased vehicle indefinitely under someone else's name.

The CarAdvisers Used-Car Buying Funnel

A better online buying system looks like this:

100 Listings
↓
20 Cars That Fit Your Requirements
↓
5 Comparable Shortlisted Cars
↓
3 Sellers Worth Calling
↓
2 Cars Worth Viewing
↓
1–2 Cars Worth Professional Inspection
↓
1 Fully Verified Car
↓
Negotiate → Transfer → Pay → Drive Home

That is the key difference between browsing cars online and buying a car intelligently online.

You should spend your inspection money and travel time on the strongest candidates — not on every attractive photograph.

CarAdvisers Insight: The Three-Layer Verification Rule

Before buying any used car, verify three separate layers.

Layer 1 — Identity

Is this actually the vehicle being advertised?

Check registration, chassis, engine details, variant, model year and ownership.

Layer 2 — History

What happened to the car before today?

Review service history, ownership information, documented repairs and, for Japanese imports, independently verified auction records where available.

Layer 3 — Condition

What are you physically buying today?

Professional inspection, diagnostics, paint measurement, mechanical condition, tyres, brakes, suspension, electronics and road behaviour.

A car can pass one layer and fail another.

That is why vehicle verification should never be reduced to a single report, screenshot, smart card or test drive.

Don't Want to Search Through Hundreds of Listings Yourself?

CarAdvisers' Buy Me A Car service works from the opposite direction: the buyer provides the requirement, and CarAdvisers researches the market, shortlists vehicles, screens sellers, assists with inspection, negotiation and purchase support. CarAdvisers

For buyers who prefer to search themselves, the same principle still applies:

find broadly, shortlist carefully, inspect independently and verify before paying.

FAQs

What is the safest way to buy a used car online in Pakistan?

Use online listings only to discover and shortlist vehicles. Verify the seller and official registration record, physically inspect the car, obtain an independent pre-purchase inspection, check documentation and complete the official ownership transfer before concluding the transaction.

Should I pay a token before seeing the car?

Avoid sending money purely because an online seller is creating urgency. View the vehicle, establish who is selling it and understand the transaction before committing funds.

Is MTMIS enough to verify a used car?

No. An official Excise/MTMIS record is an important verification layer, but you should also check the original documents, physical chassis/vehicle identity, ownership situation and current vehicle condition. Punjab, Islamabad and Sindh all operate official vehicle-record or transfer services.

Do I need an inspection if the seller already has a report?

Check when the report was issued and whether it belongs to the exact car. The vehicle's condition may have changed since that inspection. If the report is old or cannot be independently authenticated, consider inspecting the vehicle again.

Do Japanese imported cars need both auction-sheet verification and inspection?

They answer different questions. Auction-sheet verification can help establish earlier Japanese auction history; a physical inspection evaluates the car's current condition in Pakistan.

Final Takeaway

The internet has made finding a used car much faster.

It has not removed the need to determine whether that car is genuinely worth buying.

The strongest used-car purchase is not the advertisement with the lowest price, the cleanest photographs or the seller making the biggest claims.

It is the car that survives every stage:

right model → sensible price → credible seller → clean verification trail → acceptable inspection → complete documentation → proper transfer.

Search widely.

Shortlist narrowly.

Inspect the car you are actually considering.

Verify the history and documents independently.

Then negotiate and complete the transfer.
