Symbols and Diagrams: What They Tell You

The sheet usually includes a car diagram annotated with codes such as “A1”, “U2”, “W1”, “XX”, “C”, “P”. These highlight scratches, dents, panel replacements, rust, repainting, etc. Carusedjp

Here’s a cheat sheet:

A1, A2, A3 – Scratch (small to large)
U1, U2, U3 – Dent (minor to deep)
W1, W2, W3 – Repainted panel (quality degrades with number)
XX – Panel replaced outright (major alert)
X – Needs part replacement
C1, C2, C3, C4 – Corrosion or rust
P1, P2, P3 – Paint issues or peeling
Y1–Y4 – Crack or hole in body
G – Glass chip
RX / R – Windshield or glass repairs
S – Stone chip
H – Paint dissolving or “haze”
B – Combination of small dent + scratch

You’ll often see, for example, “A2” on the bumper or “U1” on a door. Mild annotations are normal; multiple “XX” or large “X” signs are red flags.

Interior & Exterior Grades

Inside the auction sheet, the interior is graded (commonly A–E) and exterior condition (A–E). Here’s what they roughly mean:

A — Excellent, near pristine
B — Good, minor flaws
C — Acceptable for age, normal wear
D — Noticeable stains, burns, tearing
E — Very poor, needs major fixing

So you might see e.g. Grade = 4.5, Interior = B, Diagram = “U2 on door, W1 on roof”. That gives you a composite picture.

Step-by-Step: How to Read an Auction Sheet (for Pakistani Buyers)

Find the overall grade — The big number/letter at top.
Check interior & exterior sub-grades.
Scan the car diagram for damage symbols.
Review inspection comments (often in Japanese; many verification services translate).
Match mileage reading to seller’s claim — discrepancy indicates tampering.
Check for “R / RA / XX / X” codes — major red flags.
Mind the signs of repainting — consistent color, wave lines, mismatched gaps.
Use a verification service (PakWheels, SpotMV, Car Advisers soon) to get a certified translation.
Do a physical inspection yourself (or via inspection team) and compare with sheet.
Walk away if sheet is missing or unverifiable.

Common Myths in Pakistan Car Market

Does every JDM car have an auction sheet?
No — a minority of cars may never have gone through auction, but that raises concern. Most serious importers expect the sheet.
What if the dealer doesn’t show the original auction sheet?
Request the chassis number and verify via online services. If nothing matches, treat it as a red flag.
Can the sheet detect flood damage or electrical issues?
Not reliably. Auction inspectors focus more on body, interior, and mechanical condition. Always combine with a full inspection (engine, wiring, chassis)
Does a “Grade 4” car always mean “good”?
No. “4” is relative — in one auction, it might be very clean; in another, more worn. Use the diagram and comments to judge.
Do grades matter for resale in Pakistan?
Absolutely. A car with verified high grade has better resale value and buyer trust. Forums often mention avoiding cars without sheets.

Real-World Example: Decoding a Sheet

When you see this:

Grade: 4
Interior: B
Diagram: “U1 on left front door, W2 on right rear panel”
Mileage: 58,000 km

Interpretation:

Overall, a decent car in the used-import range.
One small dent, one repaint section.
The interior is clean.
58,000 km is moderate — compared to the seller’s claim.
You’d ask: Was a repaint needed? Is there paintwork quality? Has the chassis been aligned? Then compare with physical inspection.

Final Thoughts

Understanding Japanese auction sheets is no longer optional—it's essential if you want to import with confidence in Pakistan. A sheet tells you much more than what a showroom photo can. For Pakistani buyers and importers, interpreting the grade, symbols, interior/exterior notes, and matching them with a physical inspection is the key to avoiding a lemons gamble.

FAQs

What does an “R” grade mean on an auction sheet?

It indicates the vehicle was repaired after an accident. This is considered high risk, and a thorough inspection is strongly recommended.

Can repainting be hidden on the auction sheet?

Yes. “W” codes usually indicate repainted panels, and the quality of repainting can vary.

Is a Grade 4.5 vehicle always safe?

No. While it’s generally a good grade, it still requires verification. Always review the diagram, repair notes, and confirm with a physical inspection.

What if the auction sheet is missing?

Request the chassis number and verify it through auction sheet verification services. Missing sheets often signal potential risk.

Do auction sheets reflect mechanical condition?

Only to a limited extent. Major mechanical issues may not appear, so always combine the sheet review with a detailed mechanical inspection
