Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has taken a bold step toward modernising its motor vehicle setup with the launch of the Personalised Registration Mark System. This reform gives number plate ownership directly to the vehicle owner rather than the vehicle itself, similar to how a SIM card or CNIC remains linked to a person. The move signals a shift toward transparent and digital governance that resonates strongly with today’s motorists in Pakistan.
Car Advisers continues to cover such policy shifts as Pakistan’s largest and most trusted automotive platform.

A Breakthrough for Vehicle Registration in KP

The new system follows a similar digital transformation earlier seen in Punjab, where electronic records and QR supported plates helped reduce fraud. KP’s PRM model now allows complete personal control over registration identity.

The idea is simple but impactful. A carefully chosen number plate becomes your personal digital identity for mobility. Even if you sell your vehicle, your number stays with you and can be reserved for up to three years. Buyers will need to obtain a fresh plate through the Excise Department.

This is expected to greatly streamline the system, especially for owners who prefer iconic or premium numbers. It also opens the door for upcoming premium number auctions that KP officials have hinted at in recent briefings.

Digital Reform for Transparency and Law Enforcement

The initiative is part of KP’s broader push for technology driven governance under Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. Officials say the digital database improves efficiency and helps curb old issues like cloned or fake number plates, which have caused concern for both police and car owners.

With online tracking and digital verification, citizens can monitor applications without visiting government offices. This aligns well with Pakistan’s ongoing shift toward online transport services and digital documentation.

What the PRM System Means for Vehicle Owners in KP

Here is a breakdown of how the new setup benefits everyday motorists in cities like Peshawar, Abbottabad and Mardan.

Key points for vehicle owners
• Ownership of the number plate is tied to the person
• The number can be retained even after selling the car
• A number can be kept unused for up to three years
• Stronger tracking helps reduce fake and duplicated plates
• Supports future premium or special number auctions

What Happens Next in KP

The Excise Department is expected to publish rollout details including online application access and fee structure soon. Car owners across Pakistan, especially in KP and nearby regions, should follow official announcements closely. With rising interest in personalised plates and a growing digital ecosystem, this shift could influence how future registration systems operate nationwide.

The rollout is province wide. Online details will be published by the Excise Department soon.

4. Will premium or special numbers be auctioned in KP?
