Next Generation Toyota Corolla Could Arrive in 2028

Status: Reported, with an official concept already shown

The next-generation Toyota Corolla could become one of the biggest changes to the nameplate in decades.

Toyota has already previewed its future direction through the Corolla Concept, which looks significantly lower, sharper, and more futuristic than the current sedan.

The bigger story, however, is underneath the body.

Toyota has developed the concept around the possibility of several different powertrains instead of building the next Corolla around a single engine strategy.

That could open the door to petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric versions depending on the market.

Industry reports currently point towards a production version arriving around 2028, with the sedan expected to appear first.

Toyota has not yet confirmed the final engine lineup, battery capacity, EV range, or production specifications.

Images reportedly showing a more production-ready Corolla have also appeared in Japan, adding to speculation that development is progressing.

Why the New Corolla Matters for Pakistan

Few upcoming Toyota cars will be watched as closely in Pakistan as the next Corolla.

The Toyota Corolla remains one of the country’s most recognised automotive nameplates. Any major change in its design, hybrid technology or powertrain strategy could therefore have considerable local interest.

However, Indus Motor Company has not announced the next-generation Corolla for Pakistan.

For now, any Pakistan launch timing remains unconfirmed.

Toyota GR GT Is Targeting a 2027 Launch

Status: Confirmed

At the other end of Toyota’s range sits something completely different.

The Toyota GR GT is a genuine upcoming performance car developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing, with a launch targeted around 2027.

Its headline feature is a newly developed 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with hybrid assistance.

Toyota’s development targets are serious.

Toyota GR GT Target	Figure
Engine	4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid
Power	More than 650 PS
Torque	At least 850 Nm
Drive	Rear Wheel Drive
Target Top Speed	More than 320 km/h
Transmission Layout	Rear-mounted transaxle
Brakes	Carbon ceramic
Structure	Aluminium body frame

The GR GT shows how broad Toyota’s future strategy has become.

While the Corolla is being designed to accommodate several efficient powertrain options, Toyota is simultaneously developing a high-performance V8 hybrid sports car.

That is a very different approach from manufacturers that are moving almost entirely towards battery electric vehicles.

Toyota GRMN Corolla Sales Begin in 2027

Status: Confirmed

The Toyota GRMN Corolla takes the already aggressive GR Corolla formula and pushes it much further.

Toyota has revealed the model, with Japanese sales planned to begin in 2027.

This is not simply another cosmetic performance package.

The GRMN Corolla is designed as a far more focused performance car, featuring two seats, a six-speed manual gearbox and Toyota GR Four-wheel drive.

Production will also be limited.

The model is expected to be offered mainly in Japan, North America and Australia.

Pakistan has not been announced as an official market for the GRMN Corolla.

Even so, the model is significant because it shows Toyota continuing to invest in enthusiast cars at a time when much of the automotive industry is focused on electrification.

Toyota Highlander EV Is Confirmed

Status: Confirmed

Toyota has already introduced the next-generation Highlander as a fully electric three-row SUV.

The Highlander EV was initially presented as a 2027 Toyota model and is expected to be available in both Front Wheel Drive and All Wheel Drive configurations.

Selected AWD versions have been announced with output reaching approximately 338 hp, while the maximum estimated driving range is around 320 miles, depending on configuration.

Production timing has since moved as Toyota carries out additional preparation before launch.

The company continues to target a calendar year 2027 introduction, although some references have identified the vehicle as a 2028 model year product.

In other words, the Highlander EV itself is confirmed. The exact model year designation is still evolving.

Toyota Hilux FCEV Is Planned for 2028

Status: Confirmed

Toyota is also taking the Hilux into completely new territory.

A hydrogen fuel cell Toyota Hilux has been confirmed for introduction in Europe and Oceania from 2028.

Unlike a conventional battery electric vehicle, a fuel cell electric vehicle produces electricity onboard through hydrogen and uses that electricity to power electric motors.

That allows Toyota to explore another route towards lower-emission commercial vehicles without relying entirely on large rechargeable battery packs.

The Hilux is now being developed across several different technologies, including diesel, battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell powertrains.

Could a Hydrogen Hilux Work in Pakistan?

Technically, a hydrogen Toyota Hilux would be an interesting development for Pakistan.

Practically, infrastructure would be the immediate challenge.

Hydrogen refuelling stations are not currently available on the scale required to support mainstream FCEV ownership locally.

Toyota has also made no announcement about bringing the Hilux FCEV to Pakistan.

For now, the model is more relevant as an indication of Toyota’s global pickup strategy than as an imminent local launch.

Toyota Could Begin Producing EREVs in 2027

Status: Reported

Toyota is reportedly preparing another electrified technology for the Chinese market: extended-range electric vehicles.

An EREV operates primarily as an electric vehicle. Its combustion engine is generally used to generate electricity when additional driving range is required rather than directly powering the wheels in the traditional way.

Reports suggest Toyota could begin producing China-built EREVs from April 2027, followed by additional models during 2027 and 2028.

Toyota has not yet publicly confirmed which production vehicle will introduce the system.

That distinction matters.

Existing Toyota EV models should not automatically be described as upcoming Toyota EREVs until the company officially confirms the relevant vehicles.

Toyota Celica Is Coming Back

Status: Development acknowledged, launch date not confirmed

The Toyota Celica revival is no longer just an internet rumour.

Toyota executives have acknowledged that a new Celica is under development.

Recent reports suggest the future sports car could use Toyota’s new 2.0 litre performance engine, potentially combined with electrification and All Wheel Drive.

Some reports have also referred to the project as Celica Sport.

That makes the new Toyota Celica one of the most credible future sports cars in Toyota’s pipeline.

What remains missing is an official showroom date.

Toyota has not confirmed that the Celica will launch specifically in 2027 or 2028, so it should still be considered a future model under development rather than a confirmed launch for either year.

A New Toyota MR2 Could Follow Around 2028

Status: Reported

Toyota is also actively experimenting with mid-engine performance technology.

The GR Yaris M Concept places Toyota’s new engine behind the cabin and is being used to develop mid-engine vehicle dynamics through motorsport testing.

That work has naturally fuelled speculation about a new Toyota MR2.

Industry reports suggest a reborn MR2 could potentially arrive around 2028.

However, Toyota’s performance division has also indicated that the underlying development programme remains at an early stage and could require several years.

The engineering work is real.

The use of the MR2 name, along with a confirmed 2028 production launch, is not.

For now, the new MR2 belongs firmly on Toyota enthusiasts’ watchlist.

Toyota Is Studying a Smaller RAV4-Based Pickup

Status: Under consideration

Toyota could eventually add a smaller lifestyle pickup below models such as the Tacoma and Hilux.

Toyota North America has acknowledged the potential market opportunity, while industry reports suggest such a vehicle could use architecture related to the Toyota RAV4.

That would create a very different kind of pickup.

Instead of the traditional body-on-frame construction used by the Hilux, a RAV4-based Toyota pickup would likely focus more heavily on ride comfort, fuel economy, urban driving, and everyday practicality.

It could potentially compete in the growing compact pickup market.

However, the project has not received a confirmed production announcement or launch date.

Claims that a Toyota compact pickup is definitely coming in 2027 should therefore be treated cautiously.

What about the 2027 Toyota bZ and C HR?

Not every Toyota carrying a 2027 model year badge represents a completely new launch.

The Toyota bZ and Toyota C HR are good examples.

Both may receive 2027 model year versions, but they are based on vehicles introduced previously rather than entirely new Toyota products arriving for the first time in 2027.

For that reason, they are not included among the major new Toyota launches covered here.

Which Toyota Cars Are Actually Confirmed?

Toyota’s upcoming product plans include a mixture of confirmed launches, credible development programmes and reported future vehicles.

The clearest confirmed models currently include the following:

Toyota GR GT, targeting a launch around 2027
Toyota GRMN Corolla, with sales beginning in 2027
Toyota Highlander EV, with calendar year 2027 still targeted despite changes to production timing
Toyota Hilux FCEV, planned for introduction from 2028

The next generation Corolla is strongly supported by Toyota’s concept programme, although final 2028 production specifications remain unconfirmed.

The Celica is known to be in development, while the MR2 and smaller Toyota pickup still require more official confirmation.

Which Future Toyota Cars Could Come to Pakistan?

For Pakistani buyers, the next-generation Toyota Corolla and future Toyota Hilux developments are naturally the most relevant.

Both nameplates already have strong market recognition in Pakistan.

That does not mean every global version will automatically arrive here.

There has been no official local announcement for the next Corolla, Hilux FCEV, Toyota GR GT, Highlander EV, Celica, MR2, or a future compact Toyota pickup.

Until local plans are confirmed, Pakistan launch dates should be treated as speculation.

What is already clear is Toyota’s broader strategy.

The company is not betting on just one type of powertrain.

Petrol engines, Toyota hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, EREVs, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and high-performance electrified models are all being developed at the same time.

That could make Toyota’s 2027 and 2028 lineup one of the most varied product cycles the company has introduced in years.

Final Thoughts

Toyota’s 2027 and 2028 plans reveal a company taking a very different route from brands concentrating on a single propulsion technology.

The next Corolla could support everything from conventional petrol power to full electrification. At the same time, Toyota is developing a V8 hybrid GR GT, an extreme GRMN Corolla, a battery electric Highlander, hydrogen-powered Hilux technology and potentially new versions of the Celica and MR2.

For Pakistan, the next-generation Corolla remains the most important model to watch because of its established position in the local market. Future Hilux technology will also be significant, even if hydrogen remains far from practical for local buyers today.

The wider message is equally interesting. Toyota is preparing for an automotive market where petrol, hybrid, EV, hydrogen, and performance cars may continue to exist side by side rather than one technology replacing everything else overnight.
