Karachi commuters are in for another challenging few weeks as the Karachi Water and Sewerage System Improvement Project (KWSSIP) begins extensive excavation along University Road. The closure, starting November 10 to December 30, will affect the busy stretch between Nipa Chowrangi and Federal Urdu University, one of the city’s most congested corridors.

According to officials, the shutdown is necessary to lay 96-inch and 72-inch pipelines under the K-IV augmentation plan, part of a major effort to improve Karachi’s water supply system. The project involves installing a 2.7-kilometer network of new pipelines that aims to increase efficiency and reduce water shortages in several districts.

Traffic Chaos Adds to Karachi’s Woes

The announcement comes at a time when Karachi’s traffic system is already under pressure from ongoing BRT Red Line construction. Major routes in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gulistan-e-Jauhar have turned into construction zones, leaving residents to deal with gridlock, dust, and noise pollution on a daily basis.

Authorities say the first phase of the KWSSIP pipeline work will cover the section between Nipa Chowrangi and Federal Urdu University, while the second phase will stretch from Hasan Square to Nipa Chowrangi. Although December 30 is set as the completion date, many commuters remain skeptical due to Karachi’s long history of project delays and incomplete roadworks.

Road Closure Details

Section	From	To	Closure Duration	Project Type

Traffic police have advised motorists to use alternative routes through Gulshan Link Road and Bahadurabad, especially during peak hours. Commuters are also urged to plan ahead and follow Karachi Traffic Police’s official social media updates for live route advisories.
